This image, taken using a confocal microscope, details specialised structures located at the base of intestinal villi called The Crypts of Lieberkuhn. These finger-like projections house cells known as Paneth cells (pink and blue), which, by secreting antimicrobial substances, help to maintain a healthy gut environment.
